Principles and Assumptions
Well-being theory posits that five psychological elements contribute to a flourishing life (Seligman, 2012): positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment (PERMA) . Positive emotions are momentary in nature and can be forward-looking (e.g., optimism), present focused (e.g., happiness), and reflective (e.g., life satisfaction). Well-being theory states that the frequent experience of positive emotions contributes to a flourishing life. While positive emotions are important, it is only one of five components of well-being. The second component is engagement. The concept of engagement originates from Csikszentmihalyi’s (1997) “flow” concept, which represents a psychological state of mind where an individual is fully immersed and absorbed in a particular task or activity. Third, positive, healthy , and supportive relationships are a critical component to attaining well-being across the life course according to well-being theory and multiple studies (e.g., see Holt-Lunstad, Smith, & Layton, 2010). Meaning is the fourth component of well-being and encompasses a sense of belonging to something greater and having purpose and meaning in one’s life. Accomplishment is the fifth and final component of well-being and refers to the feeling of success, mastery, and achievement because of one’s efforts. Well-being theory suggests that the combination of these PERMA elements contributes to a full and flourishing life.
